The biggest change in the still very young motorsports event, Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series, was to happen in 2003 but its shadows were cast in the year 2002 itself, a full year before it was to actually take place. The Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series was to introduce a new class of cars in the 2003 season, the Daytona Prototype and it was with the announcement of this historic happening and the accompanying enthusiasm that 2002 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series season started off on a high. The first race of the season was the much acclaimed Rolex 24 At Daytona and with this prestigious race the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series made a grand start to what was to end up as another high point in the history of the world of motorsports especially the Grand Am Rolex racing. The season witnessed races where there was not only competition among the racing teams to come out on top within the class but was also a competition among the classes as to who would win the overall championship. It was with this enthusiasm that the third season of Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series started off and promised a lot of action, a lot more than what had been seen so far.

There were many changes introduced in the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series for the 2002 season and that included addition of some new tracks and removal of others. There were no races at the Lime Rock Park, Road America and Mid-Ohio whereas instead of Trois-Riviers, Mont-Tremblant became the Canadian stop for the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series. Another noticeable change in the year 2002 was the return of Paul Reverse 250 after a gap of one year. The 2002 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series had another highlight which had Daytona International Speedway as the reason behind it. In that season the home of Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series held three races which included the season grand finale as well.

2002 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series had five different classes as was the case with the preceding season but with growing popularity and enhanced significance the competition had only got tougher. The first race of the season Rolex 24 At Daytona was won by Didier Theys in the Rolex Series who was driving for the Doran Lista Racing. He followed the initial success with two more back to back wins and won four races overall. In the GT class Rolex 24 At Daytona was won by Kevin Buckler and Michael Schrom who went on the win the next one too. The title though was captured by Bill Auberlen and Cort Wagner who won as much as five races to rightfully claim the title. Overall the season was fantastic in every sense with fast cars running down the race tracks and some very awesome drivers competing for the glory that comes after racing alongside some of the great drivers in highly advanced cars and then topping it with winning the much coveted title. The 2002 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series was definitely a great year for the Grand Am Rolex series as well as for the entire world of motorsports.
